Merrilee Moore
2009 Artist of the Year
Contrast, texture, light, shadow, depth, interest, and the unusual…these are things I look for. These elements came alive for me during the 8 years I worked as a personal chef. The creation of exciting, visual, edible presentations was the art form that led me to study fine art, first at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle and then at the world-renowned Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. After 10 years of creative evolution, my art ranges from functional objects to large mixed media sculptures. I’m intrigued with the juxtaposition of glass and stainless steel and look forward to adding light and water to the mix. Each creation is a challenge, but glass is my passion. I’m truly living my dream! I’m proud to say that my artwork has been featured in several solo exhibitions in one of Seattle’s top galleries Foster/White. And has been purchased by famous art collectors such as Sir Elton John and Ann Getty. Why do I create art? That’s a good question. It’s like breathing I just do… People have different needs in life. Different things make them feel complete, and my thing is creating. Every experience affect’s my perception and in turn the “meaning” everyone is hoping to find. I have to give meaning to what I do this is it; I do it because I love it and I want people to enjoy it. I think color is important and every one needs a little in their life. So I try to make that possible in many shapes and sizes.
Most of the time the message is…be happy, enjoy what you have, share with other’s and lighten up! Don’t take things to seriously and most of all…life ain’t perfect, very interesting, but not at all perfect.
