Deon C. Matzen
Oil Paintings
Clinton, WA
Deon Matzen lives and paints on Whidbey Island where she has been a resident for the past 35 years. She holds a BA in Fine Art from Seattle Pacific University and teaches painting, drawing, printmaking and design at Skagit Valley College’s South Whidbey Campus. In 1995 she started painting focusing on Watercolor. In 2001 she and her husband taught for a year in Beijing, China at the Beijing Foreign Studies University. While in China they had the opportunity to travel extensively and as a result, Deon collected a great deal of material for painting. The rammed earth houses of China lent themselves well to being painted in oil and upon her return to the US she started painting in oil. Though watercolor is her first love, most of her recent works are paintings in oil. Most of her work is painted alla prima. She has had a one-person show at the Gilmartin Gallery in Seattle and the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts. She is a member of the Women Painters of Washington, The American Artists Professional League, The Artists of South Whidbey and a lifetime member of the Island Arts Council. In 2004 one of her oil paintings of China will be featured in a publication by The International Artists Magazine. When not painting and teaching, she gives workshops and lectures.
